Tolkien is everywhere. There is no escaping the Tolkien.
Well, shinu-ki literally means dying will, but a smarter translation would be "determination". The whole "shoot Tsuna to bring out dying will/determination" is kind of a lame pun in japanese. XD Putting it another way, "dying will" can be either "shit, I'm going to die" or "I'mma do this if it kills me!" which are basically Tsuna before and after being shot with the first DW bullet. XD;
So I never interpreted his HDW as involving such a dreary mental state. Mostly I ran with the assumption that hyper intuition = hyper awareness x10 and that Hyper Dying Will allowed him to compile and filter all the sensorial information he was constantly bombarded with (and stressed by), giving him a clarity of mind he usually doesn't have. I even wrote a fic in which I used this theory to explain Tsuna's tsunaness both in and out of HDW-mode, mostly because I don't think I can effectively describe my mental image of his headspace in a single paragraph. I can link if you're interested.
I'm willing to take the matter of Byakuran's death at face value, without expecting moral consequences on Tsuna's part, because 1) How else do you neutralize such an overpowered psycho?, 2) Byakuran would kill everyone he knew and then plunge the world into chaos and tyranny, and had already done so in however many other realities, and 3) If Tsuna let him live, he'd just use his powers to acquire information from other realities and slip away eventually to regroup. Even while normal, right before the last battle, Tsuna seemed perfectly aware that it was kill or die... so, no, I don't think HDW affects his moral compass, not that much. It does probably give him a clearer view of the wider picture, though, inasmuch as it enhances his background information compiling speed and allows him to make intuitive connections to causes and effects.
Does this make sense? It's night and I just came back from German class.
Then again, I'm usually not the one to go for creepiness. Maybe with any other character I would accept that, but with Tsuna I can't help but pursue the potential for awesome, because I just think he deserves to be badass without compromising his beliefs.
